The correlation between Cervical Cancer and the

RESUMO

Este estudo analisa a produção científica sobre a correlação da infecção por Papilomavirus

Humano (HPV) com o câncer do colo do útero, tomando como referencial os pressupostos de

Ganong (1987). Optamos por realizar uma revisão integrativa sobre a produção científica

acerca da correlação do HPV com o câncer do colo uterino. A amostra foi composta por 24

artigos que abordavam o HPV e o câncer do colo uterino da literatura nacional, publicados de

2000 a 2005 e indexados nas bases de dados Lilacs e Scielo. A análise dos artigos possibilitou

a identificação de oito categorias temáticas e os resultados apontam para a importância da

compreensão do HPV para controle do câncer do colo do útero, da prevenção e do diagnóstico

precoce e eficiente e do tratamento adequado para cada tipo de lesão para diminuir a morbimortalidade por

esta neoplasia.

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the scientific literature on the correlation between infection by the Human

Papilloma Virus (HPV) and cervical cancer, using Ganong’s (1987) presuppositions as a

reference. We carried out an integrative review of the scientific literature concerning the

correlation between HPV and cervical cancer. The sample was composed of 24 articles about

HPV and cervical cancer in the Brazilian literature, published between 2000 and 2005, and

indexed in the Lilacs and Scielo databases. The analysis of the articles led to the identification

of eight thematic categories, and the results shows the importance of an understanding of

HPV in the control of cervical cancer, of prevention, early and efficient diagnosis, and the

appropriate treatment for each type of lesion to diminish morbidity and mortality caused by

this neoplasia.
