Kintu and Nambi (Baganda Myth, Uganda)

Kintu, the first man, lived alone on the earth except of one cow which supplied his nourishment. One day, Nambi, daughter of Gulu, ruler of the sky, come to earth and fell in love with Kintu. The couple wanted to marry, but Nambi’s family considered Kintu too poor and ignorant. Gule then arranged several testes in which Kintu could prove his worth. Gulu stole his cow, so Kintu feasted on leaves. Nambi reported that the cow was in heaven, so Kintu had to traverse heaven to retrieve it. There Gulu imprisoned Kintu in a hut with food enough for one hundred people and forced him to eat it. Kintu ate much, then hid the rest in a hole in the floor. He summoned the servants to remove the empty buckets, for another impossible task. Gulu gave Kintu a copper axe, and ordered him to split rocks for firewood. Kintu realized one rock was cracked, and he broke off splinters from it. A fourth test required Kintu to fill a water-pot with dew. While despairing over how to fill it, Kintu lifted the pot and found already full. As a final test Gulu instructed that Kintu should find his cow grazing among Gulu’s similar herd. When he had retrieved his cow, then he could marry Nambi. A bumble bee befriended Kintu and identified the cow among Gulu’s third herd. The bee also identified three calves which Kintu decided were his cow’s heavenly offspring. Gulu was finally won over by Kintu’s cleverness, and blessed his marriage to Nambi. When the couple returned to earth they cook their cow, sheep, goat, hen, a yam, and banana.

Kintu , o primeiro homem , vivia sozinho na terra , exceto de uma vaca que fornecia seu alimento . Um dia, Nambi, filha de Gulu, governante do céu, veio à terra e se apaixonou por Kintu. O casal queria se casar, mas a família de Nambi considerava Kintu muito pobre e ignorante. Gule então organizou vários testes na qual Kintu poderia provar o seu valor. Gulu roubou sua vaca, então Kintu deleitava-se de folhas. Nambi informou que a vaca estava no céu, então Kintu teve de atravessar o céu para recuperá-la. Ali Gulu aprisionou Kintu em uma cabana com comida suficiente para cem pessoas e obrigou-o a comê-la. Kintu comeu o suficiente, então escondeu o resto em um buraco no chão. Ele chamou os servos para remover os baldes vazios, para uma outra tarefa impossível. Gulu deu a Kintu um machado de cobre, e ordenou-lhe para dividir rochas para lenha. Kintu percebeu que uma rocha estava quebrada, e ele quebrou pedaços dela. O quarto teste exigia Kintu encher um pote de água de orvalho. Enquanto desesperado sobre como enchê-lo, Kintu levantou o pote e já o encontrou cheio. Como último teste Gulu instruiu que Kintu deveria encontrar sua vaca pastando entre um rebanho semelhante de Gulu . Quando ele tivesse recuperado a sua vaca, então ele poderia se casar com Nambi. Uma abelha amiga de Kintu identificou a vaca entre o terceiro rebanho de Gulu. A abelha também identificou três bezerros na qual Kintu decidiu o prole celestial de sua vaca. Gulu foi finalmente conquistado pela esperteza de Kintu, e abençoou seu casamento com Nambi. Quando o casal retornou a terra eles cozinharam
