VARIATIONS OF ENGLISH AROUND THE WORLD

THE ORIGIN

The English arises with the Germanic peoples which occupied the current England territory. The language just born is called “Old English”, “Anglo-Saxon” or “Englisc” (Anglo’s language). Because of Christianity some Latin and Greece were introduced to complement the new language. Some years later with the Norse invasions, the “Old Norse”, dialect spoken by Anglo-Saxon peoples, also influenced the English.

The Old English is a language preserved in different sources, such as runic inscriptions. Bible translations are complex and various fragments.

The most significant difference between Old and Middle English is in grammar especially in synthesis. It is believed that the “Middle English” started with the Hastings’ Battle in 1066. In this battle, the king William defeated the Anglo-Sax people and imposed his own laws, government and language, the French. Because of this, new words were incorporated at the native language.

The Modern English is dated from 1550 with William Shakespeare when Great Britain became a colonial empire. The differences between the Old and Modern English are in the written, vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. The Old English, when compared to the Modern one is almost unknown.

The differences in the Old, Middle and Modern English are explained because of peoples’ evolution during the 1500 years. During this time the English suffered influences of different languages (Celtic, Latin and French). In addition to the cumulative vocabulary from various languages, the British expansion in the XIX century and the United States of America.

THE EVOLUTION

The first English registers are from 450 a.C. and they were called “Old English”. Along the centuries, this language increased and popularized. Incorporated new latin, germany and dutch words in your vocabulary.

In the XV century, the Modern English emerged and it’s being used at United Kingdom and all the ex-colonies until today.

There are more than one billion people in the world using the English to communicate which three hundred million have the English as a native language.

THE OLD ENGLISH

The old English is name given to the most primitive form of the English language. It was spoken on England and Scotland, during the 5th and 11th centuries.

The old English is a flexed language. It is similar to latim, Russian and some Germany. After some invasions in 1066, there was a dramatic change, the English language obtained some French characteristics.

When compared to the Modern English, the Old English is a synthetic language. It is very different from Modern English, principally the sentences’ construction and vocabulary, and difficult for Modern English speakers to understand without study. The Old grammar is quite similar to that of modern German: nouns, pronouns and verbs have many inflectional endings and forms and the word order is much freer.
