A educação popular, enquanto uma construção histórica, acompanha o movimento da sociedade.

Sua origem está fortemente associada aos movimentos sociais populares das décadas de 1950 e

1960 na América Latina, havendo ao longo dos anos mantido algumas características

fundamentais, mas ao mesmo tempo passado por deslocamentos epistemológicos, metodológicos e

pedagógicos. O objetivo desse texto é analisar algumas dessas mudanças nas últimas duas décadas,

com ênfase nos primeiros 10 anos deste século. Argumenta-se que há uma reconfiguração dos

lugares da educação popular, definidos nesse texto como territórios de resistência e de

criatividade. Chama-se atenção inicialmente para a pluralidade dos territórios que gradualmente

conquistam visibilidade. São destacados para reflexão o contexto da escola, os grupos étnicos e

movimentos sociais, e as políticas públicas. Por fim, são identificados alguns parâmetros que

marcam a reflexão teórica no período.

Abstract

Popular education, as a historical development, accompanies the movement of society. Its origins

in Latin America are strongly associated with popular social movements in the 1950ths and

1960ths. During this period, popular education has maintained some of its basic characteristics,

but at the same time there have been significant epistemological, methodological and pedagogical

shifts. The purpose of this paper is to analyze some of these changes in the last two decades, with

emphasis on the 10 first years of this century. It is argued that there is a reconfiguration of the

spaces where popular education is carried out, defined in this paper as territories of resistance and

creativity. Attention is called, first, to the plurality of territories which gradually conquer visibility.

A closer look is given to the context of the school, the ethnic groups and social movements, as

well as public policies. At the end, there are identified some parameters which mark the theoretical

reflection in this period.
