History of London (main facts)

- The city of London was founded by the Romans in the year 43. Situated on the banks of the River Thames, the Romans called it Londinium.

- Only in the XI, with the reconstruction of the bridge over the River Thames, the city regained importance and attract people.

- At the beginning of the eleventh century, was transformed into capital.

- At the beginning of the XI was built the castle Tower of London, the official residence of the kings of England.

- In 1665 the population of London suffered a major epidemic of bubonic plague. Almost a quarter of Londoners died victimized by it.

- In 1666 another disaster befell London. A great fire destroyed much of the city. It took almost15 years to the reconstruction.

- In the eighteenth century, the city of London was one of the largest and most important cities of Europe. Has attracted many immigrants, especially Jews. This great urban growth was due mainly to the Industrial Revolution. Many rural people also migrated from England to London in search of work and better living conditions.

- During the Second World War (1939-1945), much of the city was destroyed by air attacks. The rebuilding process took 10 years.

- The Modern London is considered one of the largest and most important cities in the world. Has nearly 12 million inhabitants. It is a city with a high degree of social and urban development.
