Part 2: Skimming

Na aviação, dois momentos são cruciais para o piloto demonstrar sua maestria: na decolagem e na aterrissagem. Considerando essa premissa, leia o texto 1 (text 1) utilizando a estratégia skimming, para ter uma noção geral do mesmo. Após a leitura, siga para a parte 3.

Text 1 – Directional Miscontrol

A commercial Boeing 747 recently experienced a most exciting takeoff roll. It seems the copilot was making the takeoff and considerably exceeded the computed EPR on initial power application. As the flight engineer adjusted the throttles to achieve the proper EPR, an asymmetric power situation developed and the aircraft began to drift towards the right of the runway. The copilot attempted to correct using nosewheel steering, but the light weight of the jumbo jet rendered it ineffective. Luckily, the rudder soon became effective thanks to increased airspeed, and the 747 returned to centerline and completed the takeoff without further incident.

Following the takeoff, airport officials discovered a 3,000 foot nosewheel skid mark, which started at the runway centerline and veered to within 34 feet of the grass before once again returning to the centerline. Additionally, two VASI lights were blown over by the jet blast.

An investigation revealed the captain had considered aborting the takeoff, but did not because the aircraft was returning to centerline. The skid mark was caused by full left nosewheel steering being maintained until 106 knots.
