Renomado escritor, professor e crítico, nasceu em 1895 e morreu em 1990, viveu boa parte da sua vida em Nova Iorque. Estudou na Universidade de Columbia, mas dizia que a cidade era sua formação.

Foi crítico de arquitetura para a revista The New Yorker por 30 anos.

Teve um filme baseado em sua vida chamado Lewis Mumford on the City, produzido em 1963 por Ian MacNeill. 

A partir de 1942 lecionou ciências humanas e planejamento urbano e regional em várias universidades americanas entre elas, no MIT.

Dentre 29 livros seu primeiro livro foi A História da Utopia, sua publicação mais importante em 94 anos de vida foi: A cidade na História (The City in History) de 1961.

Foi cofundador da RPAA (Associação de Planejamento Regional da América) que foi significante para o planejamento de cidades.

Lewis defendia que a tecnologia deveria estar em harmonia com o desenvolvimento humano. Disse: “A tecnologia ensinou uma lição à humanidade: nada é impossível”.

Seus estudos sobre o surgimento das civilizações e da importância da comunicação no desenvolvimento humano fizeram com que ele corajosamente refutasse o utilitarismo e criasse sua própria visão de humanismo orgânico.
