“Who controls the past controls the future : Who controls the present controls the past”

In 1948, the British George Orwell wrote an anti- utopian novel, talking about a bleak future, in the year 1984.In this novel Winston Smith lives in the ruins of London, a city in Oceania, one of the only three totalitarian superstates in the world. Just like the rest of unhappy population, he lives in a poor and filthy environment, with few material comforts and a disgusting diet of hard bread, synthetic meals, and vast amounts of ‘’ Victore Gin’’ .All over the city, posters with the terrifying photo of the boss of the ‘’Party’’ reminds the inhabitants: ‘’ Big Brother is watching you ‘’.Everywhere you go, telescreens transmit incessantly the message of the party. The telescreens could be dimmed, but never shut off. Big brother was always there.

“The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously .Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover , so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard.”

Winston is deeply unhappy with his life an keeps a secret diary of his illegal thoughts about the party. Winston works for the Ministry of thuth, which exercises complete control over all media in Oceania. His job in the Ministry’s Records Department involves rewriting historical records in order to update the Party’s version of the past. Because the perception of the past must be constantly changed because of the events of the present, the task is a never – ending one.

However, Winston is fascinated by the real past, and eagerly tries to find out more about the forbidden real history. At the Ministry of Truth, he meets Julia, and the two begin an illegal relationship, because love relationships. She also has thoughts against the Party. As the relationship progresses, Winston’s views begin to change, and he finds himself relentlessly questioning the government. Unfortunately, he and Julia are under surveillance by the Thought Police.
