Theme: Abortion

Abortion is a highly controversial issue that has been continually debated in the whole world in the past few years and will probably continue to be discussed in many years to come. The main controversy is if abortion should be legalized or not. A woman should have every right to choose what to do with her body and decide whether she will have the baby or terminate the pregnancy for solid reasons.

There is a great number of strong arguments concerning the topic. The first is that the decision to proceed, or not, with a gestation should not be dictated by the state. The Guttmacher Institute shows that, between 2010 and 2014, an estimated 56 million induced abortions occurred each year worldwide. This number represents an increase from 50 million annually during 1990-1994. Brazil records an average of four deaths per day of women seeking relief in hospitals due to complications of abortions.  Therefore, women need to have right and autonomy over their bodies and decide whether or not they want to carry on a pregnancy.

Also, a study by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that in countries where abortion has been legalized, there has been a substantial drop in the number of abortions. Some countries have even reduced the number of maternal deaths, such as Uruguay, where 33 thousand abortions used to happen per year and, after legalization, the number of procedures dropped to four thousand. By contrast, in countries where the practice is criminalized the procedure could not be reduced. The global study concludes that the criminalization of abortion is not the solution to reduce this practice but rather public policies of family planning, access to health, and information. The fact that abortion is illegal in Brazil does not mean that women have stopped doing it. When rich women decide to stop their pregnancy, they can afford the high prices charged by clandestine clinics, yet poor women use dangerous home methods or shoddy clinics.

On the other hand, abortion brings perverse and significant psychological and physical consequences to women. Among the physical consequences are: shock in the nervous system, breast cancer, preterm delivery, infections, and sterility. The psychological consequences include post-abortion syndrome, feelings of remorse and guilt, mood swings and depression, unmotivated crying, fears and nightmares. Even with the legalization of abortion, women will be exposed to several health problems.

In conclusion, abortion is a serious issue and it should be researched more. I advocate sex education and the use of contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancy. Furthermore, abortion should be legal, safe and free in order to prevent women from dying. Society needs to be aware about the history and international use of abortion, as well as the empirical and moral claims made by both sides of the issue.
