ABSTRACT

The objective of this research is to present an analysis of the role of technology in education during the pandemic of the new coronavirus, from the perspective of teachers and students. This work is an exploratory, quantitative and qualitative research, in which works from authors such as Bozkurt and Sharma, Shyamlee and Phil, Ürün were used as basis, among others, after obtaining an overview of remote education in teaching / learning the English language during the period of social isolation, analyzing how teachers and students, through technological resources such as computer, laptop, tablet and cell phone, with Internet access, are adapting to try to make up for the lack of face-to-face classes , the challenges encountered and the main advantages of this teaching modality. The article had the participation of teachers and students from public and private networks in the city of Altamira-PA and made it possible to obtain feedback from the participants regarding the real effectiveness of teaching / learning English remotely, using technological resources, since such resources are widely used today.

RESUMO

O objetivo desta pesquisa é apresentar uma análise do papel da tecnologia na educação durante a pandemia do novo coronavírus, sob a perspectiva de professores e alunos. Este trabalho trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória, quantitativa e qualitativa, na qual usou-se como base, obras de autores como Bozkurt e Sharma, Shyamlee e Phil, Ürün, entre outras para após a obtenção de uma visão geral do ensino remoto no ensino/aprendizado da língua inglesa durante o período de isolamento social, analisar como professores e alunos, por meio de recursos tecnológicos como computador, laptop, tablet e telefone celular, com acesso à Internet, estão se adaptando para tentar suprir a falta de aulas presenciais, os desafios encontrados e as principais vantagens dessa modalidade de ensino. O artigo contou com a participação de professores e alunos das redes públicas e privadas da cidade de Altamira-PA e possibilitou a obtenção de um feedback dos participantes em relação a real eficácia do ensino/aprendizagem de inglês remotamente, usando recursos tecnológicos, uma vez que tais recursos são amplamente utilizados atualmente.

  1. INTRODUCTION

Humanity has faced several pandemics over the years. The latest and inaction is COVID-19, caused by the New Coronavirus, named by experts as Sars-CoV-2. This virus has caused problems not only in the area of ​​health but also in the economy, politics, education, trade, etc.

It is understood that the problems mentioned above are consequences of the need for social isolation since the disease spreads from individual to individual. Until then, there is no vaccine for it, isolation is necessary. According to Soares (2020), “O conceito de distanciamento ou isolamento social surgiu com a gripe espanhola, em 1918”[3], proving to be effective in reducing the spread of the virus.

With the measure of social isolation, in the Brazilian educational context, schools needed to cancel  classes and start the search for alternatives that can make them adapt to reality and fulfill their duty to teach even in the midst of the pandemic, because, it is unknown yet, even when the state of isolation will last.

According to Estrella and Lima (2020), “O Conselho Nacional de Educação (CNE) aprovou, por unanimidade, nesta terça-feira, 28 de abril, as diretrizes para orientar escolas da educação básica e instituições de ensino superior durante a pandemia do coronavírus.”[4] These Guidelines include, as a guideline for Elementary Education, Final Years and High School, that non-classroom teaching activities have more space and that they are distributed in educational videos. In order to carry out activities, the supervision of an adult is necessary, who can guide, accompany, support in the planning, determine goals, and times of study in person or online.

This work is an exploratory, quantitative and qualitative research, in which, among the various authors, we highlight Bozkurt and Sharma, Shyamlee and Phil, and Ürün, who have extremely important data in their works to clarify several doubts about the education during the pandemic, as well as verifying the efficiency of the distance learning method, adopted by public and private schools in the city of Altamira-PA, and the role of technological resources in teaching. We also intend to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this method, from the perspective of teachers and students. In addition, seize the opportunity to obtain data on the effectiveness of technological resources in education, awareness of the main problems faced by teachers and students, possible solutions to these problems and highlight the results obtained in the research to support possible planning directed at education in this period.
